How to paint your nails

Choose a nail polish in a color that works for you. Choose a color that will reflect your mood or will match your outfit. Remember that using dark colors such as purple, black, dark red visually makes your nails look smaller, so only use them if you have long nails.
Choose a place where you will paint your nails. When choosing the right place to paint your nails, look for a clean, sturdy surface in a well-lit room. A desk or kitchen countertop is a good choice, just don't forget to put a paper towel underneath so as not to stain the surface.
Gather the necessary supplies. Gather cotton balls or discs, cotton swabs, nail polish remover, clippers, nail file, cuticle stick and a bottle of clear nail polish. Having all of this on hand will speed up the painting process and reduce the chance that you'll smudge your nail.

Wipe off the old nail polish (if you had any). Dip a cotton ball in nail polish remover and hold it on the nail for about 10 seconds. Then rub the nail with the ball to wipe off the nail polish. Use cotton swabs to remove nail polish around the edges of the nail.
Trim or file your nails. Use nail clippers if your nails are too long or have uneven ends. All of your nails should be about the same length. Then use a nail file to even out the shape of your nails. You can shape your nails into a rounded or square shape, depending on your preference.
Apply a base of colorless nail polish. Applying a base is the best thing you can do when painting your nails. The base coat will give your chosen polish a good base to hold on to, increase the durability of the coat and prevent the color from transferring from the colored polish to the nails themselves. Allow the base coat to dry completely before proceeding any further.
Apply a drop of polish to the base of the nail. Place the brush at the base of the nail just above the cuticle exactly in the center. Allow a drop of nail polish (enough to cover the entire nail) to drop at this point and drip slightly back to the very base of the nail.
